Girona

Girona province has it all: high mountains, mid-sized mountains, green hills contrasting white cliffs, dormant volcanos covered with forest, the coast, charming villages and cities. The hiking is great: everything from easy strolls in regional parks to medium or long through hikes on any of the long distance trails. Surprisingly, the trails are rarely transited, except the most accessible park trails or parts of the iconic Trans-Pyrenee trail. Our route includes the best parts of the medium-high Pyrenees, a regional park with dormant volcanos and part of the northern coast, near the French border. Come discover the Green Hills of Girona!

The Basics
– Best time of year: mid April to mid June and late August to mid October – late October possible but higher risk of bad weather
– Meet / end: Meet in Barcelona, end in Girona. Girona has excellent train service to Barcelona.
– Group: Minimum 6, maximum 10 people

What this is like

Highlights, cultural: start in Barcelona, end in Girona city; two charming mostly medieval villages, one in the volcanic area and one near the French border; medieval neighborhood in Besalú; Romanesque churches (alas, sometimes closed); old monastery on a mountain overlooking the sea; pretty bridges. Other possibility: vist Dali Theater-Museum on your own

Highlights, nature: lovely beech forest near Olot (beech, not beach); Garrotxa natural park with its dormant volcanoes, partially covered with beech and live oak forest; old pumice stone mine on one of the cones with pie-slice cut, showing colors of lava flows; views of cliffs in northern part, more or less along the French border; Mediterranean coast.
