VIRUS-TIMES HAVE COMPLICATED THE HOTEL AND ESPECIALLY THE HOSTEL (SHARED ROOM) SCENE. SOME OF THESE PLACES WERE CLOSED FOR A LONG TIME, SOME MAY STILL BE CLOSED OR HAVE CAPACITY RESTRICTIONS. DO SOME CHECKING BEFORE COMING.
Hotels in Spain are classed by type and by stars. Hotel is usually considered best, hostal is next (not a youth hostel but a more simple hotel) and pension is next, HR is a hotel-residence (no restaurant, often meant for longer stays) and APT (apartments). There is a lot of crossover: a good hostal can be better than an ok hotel. Stars are from top of line five-star down to one star. Most 2-star are fine except for people who are picky.

HOTELS CENTER MADRID: mostly in Opera – Cibeles – Tirso de Molina area. This is a good choice if you will be in the city several days and want to do a lot of different things. Wide variety of places, showing mostly budget and mid-range as the luxury places are easy to find.
Super-budget
Youth-hostel like places though without hosteling card requirement. Some places may have upper age restriction. Multiple-person shared rooms, may not have en-suite bathroom.
Los Amigos Hostel.
Calle Arenal (Metro Sol or Opera). www.losamigoshostel.com
Madrid Cat’s Hostel.
Calle Cañizares (Metro Tirso de Molina). www.catshostel.com
Beautiful interior patio. Right next to Casa Patas flamenco tablao
La Posada de Huertas:
www.posadadehuertas.com
Between Santa Ana tapa area and Huertas pub area
Mad Hostel:
calle Cabeza (Metro Anton Martin). www.madhostel.com
Quiet side street, Rooftop terrace. Farther from Sol than other places, a little closer to Atocha train station.
2060 The Newton Hostel & Market
calle Cabeza (metro Tirso de Molina) www.2060hostelandmarket.com
Near previous, but closer to Tirso and La Latina. New, looks very nice, has some private rooms, sauna, rooftop terrace and more.
Hat Hostel:
calle Imperial 9 (Metro Sol or Opera). http://thehatmadrid.com/
Fairly new, right behind the Plaza Mayor. Two people I know have stayed there and liked it.
Toc Hostel and suites: / http://tochostels.com/madrid/es / Plaza Celenque 3-5 (metro Sol and Opera). Just off pedestrian street calle Arenal, a few blocks from Sol.
Blue Sock Hostel
Gran Vía 6 (Metro Gran Via or Banco de España) https://www.bluesockhostels.com/es/hostel-madrid/
Variety of rooms from doubles to ten people, some with private bathroom, others shared bathroom. Very good location. I stayed in a Blue Sock in Oporto and would choose one again.
Budget
* Hostal Inter Plaza Mayor (formerly the Tijcal — HS 2*)
Calle Zaragoza 6, 3 (metro Sol) http://hostalinterplazamayor.madridhotels360.net/es/
This used to be a top choice in spite of the sometimes tiny rooms, hopefully it has not changed style or friendliness. Small, simple but friendly place in a great location, 30 meters from the Plaza Mayor on a pedestrian street. Try to get an outside room with balcony, if possible on upper floor. Some rooms very small. Not fancy, but most people I’ve sent here have been happy – price/quality relationship is good.
* Hotel Castilla II
Calle Marques Viudo de Pontejos (metro Sol) http://www.hostalcastilla.com/hostal-castilla-ii/
A very good choice. Quiet Street about one block from Sol. No downstairs lobby. Ask about better rates for more than one night. NOTE: “Castilla II” is better than “Castilla I”, on a noisy part of Atocha street
cs Hostal Persal
Plaza del Angel (metro Sol) www.hostalpersal.com
Friends stayed here. Downstairs lobby, some rooms small. Next door restaurant Ginger is pretty good.
Hostal Montaloya HS 2*
Plaza Tirso de Molina (metro Tirso de Molina) http://www.hostalmontaloya.com/en/
One metro stop south of Sol. This looks like a slightly better version of the Persal, though I haven’t seen the rooms. Downstairs lobby.
Additional note for budget places: No reservation before arrival? Area between Sol and Plaza Mayor is central, safe and has a lot of budget hostals. If you arrive in Madrid this is the area to try: streets like Carretas, Esparteros, Marques Viudo de Pontejos or squares like Santa Cruz, Provincia or Pontejos.
Mid-range (2 and 3 stars)
* cs B&B Madrid Centro Plaza Mayor
Calle Atocha 2 (metro Sol) https://www.hotel-bb.com/es/hotel/madrid-centro-plaza-mayor
Very near the Plaza Mayor. My pick for mid range at a good price. They have other hotels in the city
* cs Hotel Moderno H3*
Calle Arenal (metro Sol) www.hotel-moderno.com
One of my favorites. Great location, nice people. If you are sensitive to street noise, ask for upper floor onto back street.
* Hotel Victoria 4 H3*
Calle Victoria (metro Sol) www.hotelvictoria4.com/
About three blocks from Sol, great location in the tapa area, friendly staff. May have some street noise, ask for rooms on upper floor, looking onto side street (charming view) or even onto interior patio if you are sensitive to noise. Often has special deals for staying several nights.
Hotel Petit Palace Arenal and Petit Palace Puerta de Sol
Calle Arenal (metro Sol and Opera) www.hthoteles.com
Two hotels, look for names on site)
cs Hotel Europa H3*
Calle Carmen (metro Sol) www.hoteleuropa.eu
One short block from Sol on a pedestrian street
cs Hotel Dos Castillas H3*
Calle Abada (metro Sol) www.hoteldoscastillas.com
A bit farther from Sol than previous. Friendly and helpful upon my initial contacts.
HOTELS NEAR ATOCHA TRAIN STATION Atocha area is very convenient for visiting the three big art museums, Botanical Garden and the Retiro park. It’s a little farther from Plaza Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and Royal Palace (three metro stops, about 20 minutes brisk walk or 30 minutes stroll). Atocha is very convenient for transportation to the airport (bus and train), train to Barcelona and Toledo, and connected by commuter train to other main train station Chamartin and one of the biggest bus stations in the city.

Hostal Gonzalo http://www.hostalgonzalo.com/
Simple but nice place maybe 10 minutes from Atocha station
Sixty Balconies https://www.60balconies.com/
Short-term apartments right in Atocha. Apartments can be an excellent choice, but sometimes description is not very detailed (for example, four-person apartment might have two bedrooms, one with a double and other with two singles, or might have one bedroom and a sofa bed). So….if considering apartments for a group, always always ask: number of bedrooms, number of beds, number bathrooms (with shower or bathtub and with just toilet and sink), if has kitchen, does it have plates, silverware, glasses.
HOTELS NEAR CHAMARTIN TRAIN STATION
This area is not as convenient for visiting the usual tourist sights and area not as cute as downtown. But it’s a good choice if you are arriving late or leaving early, or if you don’t want an airport hotel; the Terminal 4 of the airport is three stops on commuter line from Chamartin station. (free airport shuttle bus to go to other terminals). There are fewer hotels up here and they’re more expensive than center city, except maybe first two on the list.
Walking times from station are a little more than my own brisk walking time.
Hotel Puerta Europa, probably best prices in this area. 20 minute walk or two metro stops to Valdeacederas. Website http://hotel-puertaeuropa.com/ This small group has two other hotels a little south of Hotel Puerta de Europa, more info at http://www.hoteles4c.com
Erase Un Hotel 3* Has several-hour “siesta” deal starting at 30 euros. 25 min walk or two metro stops to Valdeacederas. Website https://eraseunhotel.com/
Hotel Via Castellana 4* Paseo Castellana just north of Plaza Castilla. 15 minute walk. Website http://www.hotelviacastellana.com/
Barcelo Imagine 4* ? Just two blocks from Chamartin station, maybe 10 minute walk? Website https://www.barcelo.com/es/barcelo-hotels/hoteles/espana/madrid/barcelo-imagine/ This is new urban line of big hotel group, if link doesn’t work, go to http://www.barcelo.com and search for Madrid Barcelo ImagineHotel
Weare Chamartin, 4*, Agustin de Foxá s/n. Connected to train station, recently redecorated (says the website). https://www.weare-chamartin.com/
Eurostars Madrid Tower 5* Luxury hotel in the Four Towers Business area, very near Chamartin. (just in case you are looking for a treat). 10-15 minute walk? Website https://www.eurostarsmadridtower.com/
HOTELS NEAR AVENIDA DE AMERICA BUS STATION
Buses for Pamplona and some other destinations, mostly northeast of Madrid. This area is not near any tourist sights and does not have a wide range of places to stay. Everything here is less than 1 kilometer / 0.6 miles. Last on the list is farthest away. There are other much more exepensive places in the area, at time of posting, these are all fairly reasonable
Super budget in shared rooms (hostel / albergue type)

HOTELS NEAR MADRID AIRPORT. If you are only here overnight or if you arrive late and leave early, staying near the airport is a good choice. Some are a little closer to the trade fair area than to the airport, but they’re still a lot closer to the airport than the center city. Many of these hotels have some kind of shuttle to the airport, ask for details when reserving. The hotels on this list cater mostly to business and trade fair clients and in general are more expensive than the downtown hotels, where clients are more diversified. This list is patchwork from a number of sources and not from personal knowledge like city hotels, sorry not more detailed.

SHORT-TERM RENTAL APARTMENTS Apartments can be an excellent choice, but sometimes description is not very detailed (for example, four-person apartment might have two bedrooms, one with a double and other with two singles, or might have one bedroom and a sofa bed). So….if considering apartments for a group, always always ask: is it a studio or are there separate bedrooms, if bedrooms how many, number of beds, number bathrooms (with shower or bathtub and with just toilet and sink), if has kitchen, does it have plates, silverware, glasses.
Sixty Balconies
https://www.60balconies.com/
Two buildings, one on Almirante just off Paseo Recoletos, other right in Atocha, Atocha infinitely more convenient unless you know the city well and plan a longer stay.
LH Apartamentos
http://www.lhapartments.com/es/madrid
Several buildings in different Madrid-center areas. They do not show street addresses and general names somewhat ambiguous, so it’s hard to evaluate convenience or street noise, just to say the La Latina location is very good (my neighborhood!).
Six Rooms
http://www.sixrooms.es/
Several buildings in different Madrid-center areas. Best is probably on Relatores street, the “Plaza Mayor” building seems to be on a noisy section of Atocha street, Duque de Alba address should be avoided on Sundays as it’s almost in the very busy Rastro area, other days ok.
Budget or semi-budget chains to keep in mind.
Room Mate Hotels
www.room-matehotels.com
Moderately priced, small hotels. Most are recently redecorated in modern style. There are at least four in Madrid and others around the country.
Petit Palace chain (see above for two)
http://www.petitpalace.com/hoteles-madrid/
This chain has several three and four star hotels in Madrid.
B&B Hotels
https://www.hotel-bb.com/es
Six Rooms
http://www.sixrooms.es/
Mini chain with studios and small apartments for daily or weekly rent, a good solution if you’ll be staying a while, if you like to chill in a nice space (or if weather is not great!), or if you’d like to have the option of making your own food, due to dietary issues or personal taste. Most places are in center of the city.
Friends of the Camino hoteliers association
http://www.caminodesantiagohoteles.com/index.es.html
Not a chain but of special relevance for Camino pilgrims. Usually offers discounts for pilgrims, see website for cupon. They may ask to see your credencial (pilgrim passport). If you are staying prior to your journey explain that, if you have your passport (even if not started) or something else that shows your pilgrim-hood that may be enough. Many of these hotels are already on list above, they also have some well-located 4* hotels.
